The main purpose of a vehicle which has been converted and adapted to carry a wheelchair is so that the wheelchair user can remain seated in the chair for the duration of the journey, whilst been safe and secure. What makes a vehicle a 'wheelchair accessible vehicle' is a ramp or lift which comes out and lowers to the floor so the carer, friend or relative can assist and push the wheel chair into the vehicle with ease. Once the passenger, or driver as there are vehicles where the wheelchair user can be positioned to drive, is within the vehicle there are safetly mechanisms which ensure the chair is secure and there is an adapted seatbelt to ensure the correct fit. Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles are usually converted from an MPV, the most common and popular being a Renault Kangoo, which even once converted can still take upto three passengers aswell as the person driving the accessible vehicle and the wheelchair user themselves. Other makes and models of vehicles include Peugeot Bipper, Citroen Nemo, Peugeot Expert, VW Volkswagon Transporter, Fiat Doblo, Peugeot Boxer Monarch, Citroen Dispatch and many more. A larger WAV and a mini bus can then take upto six people as passengers plus the wheelchair user and the seating arrangement can vary to suit different needs or luggage that is also to be carried.

The type and size of your wheelchair is an important factor and this should be part of your decision making when looking to buy or hire a wheelchair accessible vehicle. If your wheelchair is large then certain Disabled Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles may not be suitable, if for example the height is more than normal then you may need to look for a vehicle with a lowered floor to accomadate this. A Disabled Vehicle should be chosen that allows the wheelchair user themselves and the other who will be travelling and assisting manoeuvring of the wheelchair into and out of the accessible vehicle, without it being difficult. The smaller to medium range wheelchairs should not present a problem in an adapted MPV, such as a Renault Kangoo or Fiat Doblo, but scooters and electric wheelchairs that are larger in size may cause a bit of difficulty in a smaller converted wheelchair vehicles and larger vehicles such as a Renault Master may be more suitable. If you have a larger then normal wheelchair its maybe best if possible to measure the wheelchair and contatc us before viewing the stock.
